A friend messaged me on Remotes, and we were trying to schedule a meeting. We had to keep exchanging our local times to figure out what worked for both of us.
This adds local time and the UTC offset to direct Remote headers, including docked chat. Group Remotes show local time beside each member who opts in. A person's time appears only when they have set a timezone and enabled the existing sharing setting, which stays off by default.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Direct-conversation headers now show a partner’s local time when they’ve opted in and set a timezone, in both expanded and compact views.
Group Remotes now show local times beside members who have opted in and set a timezone.
Updated timezone-setting text explains where shared local time appears, and clarifies that an unset timezone uses the browser timezone without sharing it. Opted-out members’ timezones are not shown.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Direct and group Remotes now expose timezone data only for partners who enable local-time sharing. Chat views display that local time when a timezone is available. Setting descriptions and documentation cover direct and group Remotes.

Local-time display has bounded refresh, response-shape, and layout issues. The PR is mergeable with owner awareness and follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 20dbc
Timezone sharing is privacy-sensitive, but the inspected response paths enforce each user's existing sharing preference on the server and retain existing conversation access controls. No introduced access-control bypass was established. Client-cache freshness during failed refreshes remains a bounded uncertainty.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The exposed value is a user's configured timezone, not precise location or credentials. Direct-page access is allowed for eligible, non-self, unblocked partners and does not require an existing conversation. Inbox rows remain scoped to the current participant, while group API reads require organization membership. The new timezone field remains subject to the target user's opt-in within these existing scopes.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The server enforces timezone suppression before transmission rather than relying solely on client visibility. The inspected web inbox and group-message JSON endpoints retain private, no-store caching headers. Direct feature-test source covers disabled sharing, enabling it, and disabling it again; these tests were inspected but not executed.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Inbox seeding replaces the stored conversations synchronously, although subscriber notification is deferred. Polling checks account ownership and inbox revision after waits, retains the last known inbox on failure, and releases its in-flight marker in finally. Account changes clear stored chat state, and watcher cleanup advances the generation and cancels pending refreshes. These existing controls bound stale-response and cross-account propagation; they do not provide immediate removal of already received timezone data during an outage.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define the freshness expectation for previously shared timezone values. If the product requires display to expire when refresh cannot confirm continued sharing, implement explicit freshness or expiration behavior rather than treating the last successful response as indefinitely authoritative.

Return the local-time fields from UserResource.
A user selected from dock developer search, or loaded through an initially unloaded direct API thread, can reach both dock headers without timezone or show_local_time. RemoteLocalTime then renders nothing, including for users who opted in. Return the actual show_local_time value so the existing opt-in guard remains effective.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Refresh the header from a complete partner payload.
The header uses the page-load partner, so preference changes remain stale while the conversation stays open. Do not replace the stored direct target with the current polled fresh.partner: the API thread payload omits timezone and show_local_time, and that replacement would hide time for opted-in partners.
Update the stored partner and read it in the header only from a refresh payload that includes both fields. Keep the API serialization change that supplies those fields separate from this stale-header correction.

Give the expanded direct dock header enough height for local time.
When a partner shares local time, the name, handle, and time rows exceed DockHeader’s fixed 48px height. The time row can overhang the header and overlap the first conversation content.
